We maintained the predictable structure of our solid-line hierarchy [...] but the intentional creation of personal relationships among members of the bureaucratically unrelated but functionally interdependent teams allowed us to break down the walls of silos.

The Task Force adapted certain aspects of networks into its own functionally siloed structure, thereby creating an entirely new hybrid model.

Bureaucracies [...] provide order and enable the objective, efficient delivery [...], but are plagued by interteam disconnect, with informal, isolated networks forming tribal narratives that may undermine the broader strategy of the enterprise.

[Networks] are complex and ever changing in their structure and produce nonlinear outcomes.

Purely social network–driven systems [...] seem to be the perfect solution for today’s environment. But [...] they lack central planning and are driven purely by narrative.

About this Blog

It’s great to welcome you on my blog, where you find a variety of interesting articles, videos, quotes, and images on leadership, mostly in a business context. Look at it as my personal, growing collection that I like to share.

I am the head of operations and a member of the executive management of an SME located in Switzerland, an alumnus of  the Open University (BA in Leadership and Management), and a conscript deputy batallion commander / chief of staff (OF-3) in the Swiss Armed Forces. During the past ten plus years, I have been leading people in different situations and organisations, ranging from small teams to large business and military units in the private sector as well as in peacekeeping missions abroad. Despite the variety, all these situations have one thing in common: the special feeling of accomplishment when a bunch of different people achieves a common goal thanks to skill, commitment, companionship, and… good leadership.
